Nationalism disappeared long ago. Nationalism is a
very peculiar form of visual awareness—pride in the
appearance of oneself and one’s country and one’s
people. We have tribalism. It’s a kind of
regionalism—not national at all. And the regions are
tending to split apart very fast. Good heavens—
there’s a huge separatist feeling in the West and in
the East! And of course, a tribal society is much less
formal than a nationalist society. They throw away
all the frills. They’re folksy. They have strong sense
of local community.
